"But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn’t even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’" (Luke 18:13)
Humility vs. Spiritual Pride
Jesus told this parable to those who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else.
The Pharisee's prayer was self-centered ("God, I thank you that I am not like other people..."). He trusted in his own works.
The Tax Collector's prayer was God-centered. He recognized his unworthiness and simply asked for mercy. Jesus said it was this man, not the Pharisee, who went home justified before God.
Key Lesson: God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. Salvation is by grace, not by our own achievements.
