God spoke all these words:
- "“You shall have no other gods before me." (Exodus 20:3)
- "“You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:" (Exodus 20:4)
- "“You shall not misuse the name of Yahweh your God, for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who misuses his name." (Exodus 20:7)
- "“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. You shall labor six days, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates;" (Exodus 20:8-10)
- "“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you." (Exodus 20:12)
- "“You shall not murder." (Exodus 20:13)
- "“You shall not commit adultery." (Exodus 20:14)
- "“You shall not steal." (Exodus 20:15)
- "“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor." (Exodus 20:16)
- "“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”" (Exodus 20:17)
A Moral Compass
The first four commandments deal with our relationship with God (Vertical), and the last six deal with our relationship with others (Horizontal). They are not arbitrary rules to restrict us, but guardrails to protect us and society.
Key Lesson: True freedom comes from living within God's boundaries.
