The High Priests of Aaron: Levitical Priesthood

The Sacred Succession from Mount Sinai to the Second Temple

Established by God at Mount Sinai, the Aaronic High Priesthood was the sacred office ordained to mediate between a holy God and a sinful people. Cloaked in holy garments with the Urim and Thummim, the High Priest alone could enter the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur with atoning blood.

The historical succession of High Priests—from Aaron through Eleazar, Phinehas, Zadok, and Onias—points directly to Jesus Christ. As the Epistle to the Hebrews reveals (Hebrews 4:14–16; 7:23–28), the Levitical priests were mortal and required sacrifices for their own sins, but Jesus is the sinless, eternal High Priest after the order of Melchizedek who offered His own blood once for all.
