The virgin mother of Jesus Christ, highly favored handmaid of the Lord who humbly surrendered to God's redemptive plan.
📜 Biblical History & Significance of Mary
Mary (Hebrew Miriam), a humble young Jewish maiden of Nazareth in Galilee betrothed to Joseph of the lineage of David, was visited by the Archangel Gabriel with the epochal annunciation: 'Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you... you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus' (Luke 1:28-31). Confused yet utterly surrendered, Mary yielded her body and destiny with the historic words: 'Behold the maidservant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.'
Filled with the Holy Spirit upon visiting her cousin Elizabeth in the Judean hill country, Mary voiced the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), a soaring prophetic hymn celebrating God scattering the proud, exalting the lowly, and keeping His ancient covenant with Abraham. She gave birth to the Savior in a stable in Bethlehem, wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger, treasuring all these divine mysteries in her heart. At Christ's circumcision, the aged prophet Simeon foretold that a sword would pierce Mary's own soul also.
Mary walked beside Jesus throughout His earthly life, prompting His first sign in Cana of Galilee. Her deepest trial came at Calvary, where she stood faithfully at the foot of the Cross, watching her firstborn suffer for the sins of the world, entrusted by the dying Savior into the care of the Apostle John (John 19:25-27). After the Resurrection, Mary was gathered in constant prayer with the disciples in the Upper Room awaiting the Holy Spirit on Pentecost (Acts 1:14).
