Beloved son of Jacob sold into Egypt who rose to Prime Minister, preserving God's people; also Joseph of Nazareth, earthly father of Jesus.
📜 Biblical History & Significance of Joseph
Joseph, the eleventh son of Jacob and firstborn of his beloved wife Rachel, was born in Paddan-aram (Genesis 30:24). Favored by his father with an ornamental robe of many colors and blessed with prophetic dreams of his family bowing before him, he earned the fierce jealousy of his older brothers. Cast into a cistern at Dothan and sold as a slave for twenty pieces of silver to Midianite traders, seventeen-year-old Joseph was taken into Egypt and purchased by Potiphar, captain of Pharaoh's guard.
In Egypt, Joseph demonstrated unyielding moral integrity and absolute trust in God. Falsely accused by Potiphar's wife when he refused to commit adultery and sin against God, he was unjustly thrown into the royal prison. Yet Yahweh was with Joseph, granting him favor with the jailer and enabling him to interpret the prophetic dreams of Pharaoh's cupbearer and baker, and ultimately Pharaoh's own dreams of seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine.
Elevated at age thirty to Grand Vizier of Egypt, Joseph stockpiled grain and saved the known world from starvation. When his famine-stricken brothers arrived seeking food, Joseph wept, tested their repentance, and revealed himself with divine perspective: 'You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to save many people alive' (Genesis 50:20). He settled his father Jacob and entire clan in the fertile land of Goshen, prefiguring Christ who was rejected by His own, suffered unjustly, and became the Savior of all nations.
